Chrysler Key Dance

Chrysler did a wonderful thing when they started to put computers into their cars back in 1984, they enabled a feature where a technician could call up a stored computer fault code easily and display it's number on the odometer of the vehicle. This eliminated the need to drag out an (at the time) big and bulky machines to read the codes. This only displayed the code, however, it did not allow the tech to actually repair it from here. DIY Mechanics quickly learned of this and have used it to avoid going to the dealer every time the check engine light came on.

This is the way you pull up any diagnostic codes that are stored in your Computer, also referred to as an Engine Control Module (ECM) or Power Control Module (PCM).

You Start with the key in the IGNITION in the OFF position. You have to turn the key to the ON position three times with the key ending in the ON position.

This is what it looks like, OFF, ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON.

The computer should enter the diagnostic mode and will display any coded on the Odometer Display. It will have a letter and four numbers. If there are more than one codes, it will scroll through them. When it is done the word "done" should turn up on the odometer. A code might look like this; P0301

Now when you check the codes, you will see that code P0301 means that the computer detected a misfire in the number 1 cylinder.
