CAM POSITION SENSOR

A common code that is thrown on our PT Cruisers is for a bad CAM Position Sensor (Code P0341). This will cause the PT to go into limp mode and will restrict the speed to about 60mph. The CAM Position Sensor tells the computer when to fire the spark to your spark plug. There is a small magnet in the end of your forward camshaft and the sensor

The CAM position Sensor is located on the end of the cylinder head and is held in with three 8mm bolts. It is an easy do-it-yourself project to replace it. I have done several of these and have found that the aftermarket sensors that you get from your local auto parts stores frequently do not offer a long term fix. In this case, it is better to just replace it with one from your Chrysler Dealer.

You might find it easier to remove your air filter and air filter box to gain access to the CAM sensor. You have to unclip the wire connector by first pushing back on the small red locking tang and then pulling off the connector. Be sure to note where the location of the connector in relation to the cam cover so you put the new sensor back in correctly. Then unbolt the three 8mm bolts and pull off the sensor. The sensor comes with a small ring of rubberized sealant on it, if the old stuff is stuck on the head, Take a rag and wipe it off. DO NOT use a scraper as you might damage the mating surface and you will end up with an oil leak.

Compare the new sensor with the old one, the color of the plastic might be different (some are black and some are grey) but they should look the same. Place the new sensor on the head and replace the three bolts. Now all you have to do is plug in the connector and slide the locking tab, replace your air filter and box if you removed it and you are good to go. If you had a engine code light you can clear it by disconnecting your battery ground wire for a couple of minutes and then putting is back on.
